What We’re Reading Right Now – Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper

In honor of Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day, our staff members have been taking turns reading Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper. It’s a story about a young girl named Melody who has a photographic memory and cerebral palsy. She’s incredibly smart but has not been given the tools she needs to communicate. She is therefore misunderstood and underestimated. It’s so interesting to see her growth both in school, at home, and around friends. We love how the book illustrates her “spoken” words and her private thoughts. It’s so nice seeing how others’ perceptions of Melody change and how that impacts her.

It’s an easy read that is good for all ages. If you’re a teacher, read it to your students. If you’re a parent read it with your kids. If you’re neither, read it for yourself. It’s wonderfully inspiring and beautifully written. Not surprisingly, it’s also a #1 New York Times best seller.
